eIF-4E is a cap-binding protein that interacts with eIF-4G to bind to the 5' cap structure of mRNA, facilitating the initiation of translation.  The cap structure of eukaryotic mRNAs is bound by specific eIFs prior to association with the preinitiation complex. Cap binding is accomplished by the initiation factor eIF-4F. This factor is actually a complex of 3 proteins: eIF-4E, eIF-4A, and eIF-4G. The protein eIF-4E is a 24-kDa protein which physically recognizes and binds to the cap structure. In order to bind the cap, eIF-4E must interact with eIF-4G which serves as the scaffold for the formation of the complete eIF-4F complex.
