Adiponectin is an adipokine that enhances insulin sensitivity. As visceral fat increases, adiponectin secretion decreases, contributing to insulin resistance.  Expression and release of adiponectin is stimulated by insulin and inhibited by TNF-α. Levels of adiponectin are reduced in obese individuals and increased in patients with anorexia nervosa. There are sex-related differences in adiponectin levels as well similar to that seen for leptin where age and weight matched males have lower levels than females.
