The shaken baby may experience altered levels of consciousness to complete loss of consciousness. Irritability, changes in skin color to paleness or cyanosis, vomiting, lethargy, and convulsions are additional symptoms. Most of the time, there is no outward indication of physical trauma. Fractured or dislocated bones and neck or spinal injuries may be found. Examination of the eyes may reveal retinal hemorrhages (see Figure 15-31).
