Object permanence refers to the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are out of sight. Researchers have found that infants as young as 8 or 9 months old display this understanding. However, the A-not-B error occurs when infants continue to search for an object in the location where they previously found it (location A), even though they have just seen it being hidden in a different location (location B). This error can occur up to around 18 months of age, and is thought to reflect limitations in the infant's ability to inhibit a previously learned motor behavior (i.e. reaching to location A).
