Since the year 2000, the EU has admitted 13 new member states, of which 12 are from Eastern Europe (namely Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and most recently, Serbia and Montenegro). One country, Cyprus, joined from Western Asia, but is considered part of Europe for political and economic reasons. No new members have been admitted from Northern or Southern Europe since 2000.
