The microtubular spindle develops during prophase, as the spindle fibers extend from the centrosomes and begin to attach to the chromosomes. During interphase, the cell is preparing for cell division and the spindle fibers have not yet formed. In anaphase, the spindle fibers pull the sister chromatids apart toward opposite poles of the cell.
