A rain shadows occurs when warm, moisture laden air blows in from the ocean and encounters a mountain range. In order to cross the mountains the air rises higher into the atmosphere and as it cools it can no longer hold the same amount of moisture which is lost as rainfall on the windward side of the mountains. The air then crosses the mountain and sinks on the leeward side where it warms as it descends and picks up moisture from the surrounding environment making it very arid.Bloom's
