DNA transposons move directly from one location in the genome to another, carrying their original DNA sequence (including any markers) with them. Retroelements, however, transpose through an RNA intermediate; the original DNA sequence is transcribed into RNA, which is then reverse-transcribed into DNA and inserted at a new location.
