Water always moves from an area of high water concentration (hypotonic) to an area of lower water concentration (hypertonic) in order to equalize the concentrations on both sides of the membrane. In this case, since the concentration of glucose is higher outside the cell, the water concentration is lower outside the cell, making the extracellular fluid hypertonic.
