Piaget's theory of moral development suggests that children's moral reasoning shifts from a focus on the consequences of actions to an understanding of the intentions behind those actions. Initially, children judge the morality of an action based on its outcomes, but as they grow, they begin to consider the intentions and motivations of the person performing the action.  In Piaget's view, as a child progresses through the stages of cognitive development, moral development occurs in terms of the relative weights the child assigns to the consequences of an act and to his own intentions. As the child gets older, the relative weight of intention increases in moral judgments.
