Amino acids (the components from which polypeptides and proteins are made) are metabolized by the liver to urea, through the biochemical process known as the urea cycle. Urea is a nitrogenous, metabolic end product of amino acid metabolism that is toxic in high concentrations. It is a water-soluble compound and is excreted from the body in urine, by the kidneys.
