The Electoral College was created to establish a buffer between the people and the election of the President. While the authors of the Constitution favored individual rights, they feared mob rule and were not quite willing to give the public control of the highest office in the state. Although it has always done so, the electoral college is not required to replicate the votes of the people when it casts its vote. This safe guard was put in place in case the people chose someone obviously unsuited to hold office.
