Generic drugs are drugs that are made by companies other than the original company after the trademark expired. Although many drugs that have been out on the market for a long period of time are available in the generic form, it is specifically when the trademark is expired that the drug may be made "generic."
Generic forms of drugs are manufactured and typically available for less money than their brand name counter parts. As a result, insurance companies prefer to pay for generic forms over brand name forms. Providers and patients have to partner together to determine if there is a generic form of a drug they need that can be more cost effective, but work just as well. Patients may have to pay a higher amount out of pocket if they choose to have a brand name drug versus a generic one.
