The two lines in the Müller-Lyer illusion appear to be of different lengths due to the principles of perceptual organization. Our brain organizes what we see based on certain principles and one of these principles is the law of proximity which groups objects together that are close to each other. In the Müller-Lyer illusion, the fins at the endpoints of the two lines cause our brain to perceive one line to be longer because the fins make it appear farther away, while the other line without the fins appears closer and therefore shorter. However, both lines are actually the same length.
