Building relationships with key stakeholders by leveraging media and networking is one of the most effective strategies for success in the STEM field. I’ve found that utilizing the power of traditional and social media to showcase my expertise has increased my visibility and helped me build a network of influential contacts.
Additionally, attending events and conferences related to my industry was advantageous for both my personal and professional growth. So always seek out opportunities to meet potential partners, collaborators, or employers through networking!
Solicit Mentorship and Support Groups for Women in STEM
Mentorship is incredibly valuable for women in STEM and should be actively sought out. Finding mentors has always been my support and guide through my career journey. This helped provide me with the insight and confidence to take risks, push boundaries, and overcome challenges.
Connecting with other women in the same field or industry can also have many positive impacts as they can share their experiences, understanding of the subject matter, as well as helpful advice. Local or industry-based support groups are also available in most cities, providing an excellent platform to create a community of inspiring women eager to lend each other their knowledge, experiences, and guidance.
Take Stand Against Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying
Most of the times I speak up when I hear inappropriate commentary or observe discrimination – it helps create an inclusive environment for everyone working in the field. Additionally, there are resources available if you need help filing complaints or understanding your rights meaningfully protecting yourself (and others) from inappropriate behavior.
Utilize Technology to Advance Your Career Development Objectives
Technology is an essential tool in advancing your career objectives in the STEM field. It’s important to start learning and understanding new technologies as soon as possible, so that you can adapt quickly to the ever-evolving landscape.
I usually keep up with the latest tools and trends which I think gives me a competitive edge when it comes to presenting ideas in meetings and conferences, or even when studying. For example, I use Quizplus as a study tool which is useful for connecting with other students through online networks and staying ahead of my studies.
Celebrate Success Through Sharing Knowledge and Experiences With Others
There is power in knowledge and collaboration, so use your success to encourage more women to join you in the STEM field. When possible, I share my experiences with others who may find themselves facing similar challenges – be it online or offline.
I also participate in networking events, give speeches at schools, and try to contribute to newsletters and magazines. You don’t have to be a leader but when other women see that one of their own has made it in the industry, they will be encouraged to pursue their own goals without fear. And when women come together, amazing things can happen!
