How to Help Teenagers Manage Exam Stress and Anxiety

How to Help Teenagers Manage Exam Stress and Anxiety

Exams can be a major source of stress and anxiety for teenagers. As a parent or foster carer, there are several ways you can help your teenager manage these feelings and prepare them both mentally and physically to perform at their best during this stressful period.

Talk Openly About Their Feelings

Opening up channels of communication is key for parents and also when becoming a foster parent. Ask them how they are feeling about upcoming exams and listen attentively without judgement. Validate their feelings by letting them know it’s normal to feel anxious but also offer reassurance that you are there to support them. Avoid putting extra pressure on them but let them know you have confidence in their abilities. Knowing you understand goes a long way.

Help Them Get Organised

Being organised and on top of revision is proven to significantly reduce exam stress. Help them create a realistic revision schedule broken down by subject. Ensure they have all the materials and resources they need and a quiet place to study without distractions. Teach them how to use revision techniques like condensing notes, mind maps and flashcards. Having a clear plan in place will make them feel in control.

Encourage Study Breaks

While revising is crucial, teenagers also need regular breaks to recharge. Encourage them to take short breaks every 45-60 minutes. Suggest activities like walking, listening to music or calling a friend. Breaks help the brain absorb information, so they are an essential part of an effective revision plan. Make sure they aren’t spending all their free time revising. Balance is key.

Ensure They Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is vital for performing well in exams so ensuring teenagers get enough high-quality sleep should be a priority. Help establish a regular sleep routine and encourage them to wind down 1-2 hours before bed by avoiding screens, caffeine or high intensity revision. Talk through anxiety keeping them awake and provide support like warm milk or calming music. A good night’s sleep will put them in the best frame of mind to take on exams.

Make Sure They Eat Well

Eating regular nutritious meals and staying hydrated is essential during exam periods. Provide hearty breakfasts and pack lunches if needed. Keep fruit and healthy snacks on hand for study breaks. Limit sugary or caffeinated drinks which can impact energy and focus. A balanced diet will help both their mental and physical exam performance.

Be Positive

Focus any exam conversations on emphasising their preparation and abilities rather than the stress itself. Give regular reassurance that their health and wellbeing is more important than grades. Remind them that exams do not define them as a person and to simply try their best on the day. Keep up positive reinforcement to counterbalance any self-doubt.

By opening communication, helping your teen feel organised and supported, ensuring healthy routines and keeping a positive attitude, you can effectively help guide your teenager through the stressful exam period. With your help they can learn to manage anxiety and perform at their best.
