The ventilator response increases as a linear function of oxygen uptake up to 50% to 75% of O2 max. From then onwards, ventilation begins to rise exponentially. This change is seen in both a trained and untrained male athletes. The point at which VE starts to rise exponentially is called ventilator threshold, which is shown in the graph given below:
