The functional unit of a skeletal muscle is muscle cell or the muscle fiber. Each skeletal muscle is composed of several thousands of muscle fibers. The components of the muscle cells that are specific to it and enable its function are called myofibrils. Each myofibril is composed of two types of protein filaments called thick filaments and thin filaments.
