Describe the divisions and functions of the autonomic nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is part of the peripheral nervous system. It controls some of the internal organs of the body which are not usually under the voluntary control. It plays an important role in maintenance of homeostasis. It has two divisions; the sympathetic division and the parasympathetic division. Their functions are antagonistic to each other.
