Cellular respiration is the metabolic process through which nutrient energy is converted into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and waste products. The energy present in the foods is not directly available to the cells. The energy currency of cells is ATP. Foods are oxidized to release the energy they store, and the released energy is used to synthesize ATP. Cell utilizes ATP to perform its vital functions.
