The biological oxidation of food molecules for the purpose of release of energy can occur either in the presence or absence of oxygen. The oxidation of food that occurs in the presence of oxygen is called aerobic respiration, whereas the oxidation of food in the absence of oxygen is called anaerobic respiration.
