Cholera is considered to be endemic as well as epidemic disease. Main source of disease is not known. It is believed that cholera originated in India. It causes thousands of deaths per year and affects millions of people. Cholera is caused by various strains of Vibrio cholerae, which is a gram-negative, comma shaped bacteria.

Major symptoms of cholera include diarrhea, cramps and vomiting. Chronic diarrhea may lead to excessive loss of fluids from the body, causing water and electrolyte imbalance.
