Step 1 of 2

Cholera is both an epidemic and an endemic disease. It is caused by various strains of Vibrio cholerae, which is a gram negative, comma shaped bacteria. It releases endotoxins, once it enters the alimentary canal of human host. These are called as cholera toxins and cause watery diarrhea, muscular spasms and vomiting.

Because of watery diarrhea, electrolyte and water imbalance in the body takes place. This can be restored by feeding a patient with ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). Treatment also includes administering a single dose of antibiotics such as azithromycin or doxycycline. Duration of diarrhea has been decreased effectively in children by administering them zinc supplements.
