Collection procedure for quantitative fecal fat:
• Timed specimen is needed for quantitative fecal fat
• To test the fecal fat, the stool should be collected for 3 days and the samples are collected in a large, pre-weighed container
• The patient should intake 100 grams of fat per day before and during collection of specimen
• The specimen should not be contaminated with urine or water and it should be sealed and taken immediately to the laboratory
• Prior to analysis, the specimen is weighed and homogenized
• Refrigeration of specimen prevents bacterial degradation
• The specimen within the container should be opened carefully and the outside of the container should not be contaminated
• Small sample is collected after the feces in container are thoroughly mixed
• The fat is extracted with the solvent and measured with saponification
