Step 1 of 2

Relationship of urinary bilirubin in bile duct obstruction, hemolytic disorders and

liver disease:

The conjugated bilirubin only occurs in urine when degradation phase is disturbed due to bile duct obstruction (post hepatic jaundice).

• Cancer or gall stones or liver integrity damage permits conjugated bilirubin to move in the circulation

• Absence or presence of urinary bilirubin helps to identify clinical jaundice

• Urine bilirubin shows positive result to bile duct obstruction

• Liver is damaged by hepatitis or cirrhosis condition

• Urinary bilirubin provides early indication of liver disease. Urine bilirubin may show +ve or -ve result for liver damage

• Negative result is seen in urine bilirubin for hemolytic disease
