Quiz 14: Education and Health Care

Sociology

Sociologist AK has conducted a research on the climate of punishment in today's schools. Based on their research conducted on four schools in two different states he came to a conclusion. His findings states that excessive security, surveillance cameras, metal detectors etc. at school is unfair and there has to be certain limit in controlling and keeping an eye over student's behavior. These activities in fact have a negative effect on student's behavior as they get involved in the wrongdoing acts to go against the school's rules that are perceived to be unfair. The kind of security that was in place at a high school that was attended consists of CC cameras and high surveillance of student's activities. Teachers were there to keep an eye over the students and their activities. Security guards were there to look after the security of the school building and its surrounding. As per my opinion, this kind of security was very much effective and it really increased the student's behavior towards betterment as no strict rules are imposed on student's behavior. Most of the problems are dealt by the teachers and there is less interference of supervision apart from teachers. The students respected teachers and were of great honor to their identities. Any kind of misbehavior is immediately brought to the notice of the teacher who would counsel and resolve the issue with little or no interference of parents. Parents are involved only at required cases and the student is advised rather being punished for any wrongdoing while keeping an eye on student. Although security is maintained, care was taken that it is not interfered with the student's activities and has less impact on student's behavior.

"Homeroom security" is an increasing culture in schools now a day where high and strict supervision and control is imposed to influence behavior of the students. As there are higher chances of activities such as bullying, crime and victimization in high schools, an atmosphere of punishment is created to control such behavior. Use of strict security with surveillance cameras, metal detectors, security guards has increased the use of homeroom security that created more negativity among the students for wrong doing. These enhanced security practices are not able to address the student's needs. These practices have a negative effect on the students who do not like these rules and may provoke them for wrongdoing. These practices of punishment and discipline outweigh the threat of actual wrongdoing.
