Quiz 5: Social Structure and Social Interaction

Sociology

In general, women's cultivate to the ideas of beauty based on the information they gather from different sources. Based on this, sociologist DG wanted to undergo research where the source of information for the women's is considered to be salons. The research surrounds the social interaction that takes place in the beauty parlor between the hair stylists and the clients. This interaction often becomes very close and deep on the basis of the age, gender, social class and race of the stylist and the clients. The dynamic may change when stylists are men. Gossip may not happen to a level where personal information can be shared. Moreover, the relation between men and women would be more targeted towards beauty tips which women's would seek to have when they visit to a salon occupied by men stylists. So, expectations of DG may go wrong in this situation. There will be a gap between the interactions, and mostly will be limited to the beauty tips. The major reason behind this is the trust level they possess towards sharing personal information with strangers.

A trade-off game named prisoners dilemma is focused on social interaction. The dilemma in the game is to identify who the thief is among the two robbers named CB and MK. The two prisoners MB and MK are in a dilemma whether to betray, or to stick to deny the confession. Here, the police investigating the crime allow each of them to confess their crime. In this situation, the study should be focused on what would be the response of prisoners. If both of the subjects in the prisoner's dilemma experiment were of opposite gender the result may vary based on the cooperation and trust theory. In general, the behavior of the feminine gender will vary when compared to that of a masculine. In the situation above, where opposite gender come across a confession, women may confess the truth due to fear of punishment. The feminine gender is found to be sensitive when compared to that of a masculine. So, feminine gender can be cooperative or also can betray to their partner based on the situation.

The research surrounds the social interaction that takes place in the beauty parlor between the hair stylists and the clients. This interaction often becomes very close and deep on the basis of the age, gender, social class and race of the stylist and the clients. More often stylists not only bring new style to their clients, but also engage in emotional work while doing their service. This is quite common, irrespective of which class they belong to. White or working class, both of them may be interested in sharing thoughts while providing services of the hair salon. The status of whites is considered to be higher than working class, but still they have no command over the styles, and have to take the help of stylists. Here, stylists have a lower class status when compared to whites and working class people. The research stands still on whether the customers and stylists are not white or they are all working class, because hairdressers or stylists possess more knowledge of beauty. So, while the conversations do exist between the stylist and client, the stylist will always try to build the impression by focusing on the knowledge he or she possess irrespective of the class.
