According to 2010 dietary guidelines of Americans a plate is used as a basic visual metaphor. The fruits and vegetables are constituted on the left side of the plate with vegetables occupying more share than fruits. The grains and protein foods including meat, poultry, sea food, beans and peas and nuts and seeds make up the half of the plate on the right side. In these each ingredient is of equal amount roughly. Each half of the plate corresponds to the healthy diet. The dairy products are placed as a cup next to the plate complete the remaining portion of the diet. The USDA has recommendations with each food group to make up a nutritious diet chart. Typical American diet consists of food with high fat, sugars, salt and no calories. Some fruits, vegetables and whole grains though are the part of the diet more than half of the diet plate contains foods of no caloric value. American school children do not consume enough fruits and vegetables every day. High percentages of drinks such as soda or soft drinks are consumed on daily basis. These poor eating habits started in the childhood carry till adulthood and are hard to change. The poor eating habits lead to long term consequences like overweight, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, more healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables should be consumed and adequate physical activity and lifestyle behavior change patterns must be followed.
A balanced diet with low fat and high amounts of fruits and vegetables and fiber are required to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension and other chronic conditions. The healthy diet makes the body stronger with regular physical activity bringing the desired benefits. The regular physical activity improves the mood and quality of sleep. It helps to reduce the stress and builds healthy muscles, bones and joints. Regular exercise helps to keep fitness and preserve independence. The sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating patterns cause of about 400,000 deaths per year. Regular physical activity is useful to improve the mental and physical health increasing the quality of life. The physical activity can be intense or moderate including the activities like walking, dancing or yoga. Physical inactivity is a serious national problem in United States. About 14.7% or 1 out of 6 women only follow the government recommended levels of physical activity of 2.5 hours per week. More than 50% of U.S adults do not have adequate physical activity to maintain basic health benefits. The physical activity was found to be decreased with the age and is more common in people of lower income group, less education and non-white ethnicity or race. The modern lifestyles not require much physical movement with the advancement in the technology. To stay fit U.S women need to do some daily activities and should commit some time and energy for exercise. The mental makeup is most important as well as the discipline. A regular exercise without failure can keep up the individual fit and healthy.
Physical inactivity leads to weight gain and obesity that may cause severe health consequences. The medical costs of obesity in U.S during 2008 were estimated at $148 billion and might be increased more by now. Direct medical costs include treatment of diseases associated with obesity including diabetes, joint diseases, heart diseases etc. The indirect cost associated with obesity includes loss of productivity, premature disability and premature death. Health care costs including surgery for obesity and additional cost such as huge chairs, beds, special size cloths and medications etc. cause burden to individuals and families. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of death from injury, heart disease. Physical activity is required to maintain healthy cardiovascular status. Regular activity lowers the blood pressure, reduces the body fat, maintains the cholesterol levels and reduces the stress. Other chronic conditions such as colon cancer, type II diabetes, osteoporosis and obesity stay away with regular physical activity. Therefore, the physical activity to stay healthier reduces the incidence of chronic diseases than individuals who do not have adequate activity and are at greater risk of illness. However, health insurance is common for all types of individuals who have regular physical activity or not. The individuals stay fit with physical activity may get affected by chronic disease due to some other risk factors. Hence, insurance policy implementation is nothing to do with regular physical activity.
