Sexual Health

The physical, psychological, social, cultural and emotional aspects influence the sexual health and interactions between humans. The sexual health demands a positive approach to explore the sexuality, sensuality and sexual relationships that may cause pleasurable and safe sexual experience without violence. Sexual health depends on psychological and scientific perspectives. The sexual health includes the responsible sexual behavior avoiding sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unwanted pregnancy, sexual abuse and or violence. Sexuality in a positive perspective is a thoughtful and respectful aspect that discusses the issues that may be difficult or not liked by people to talk openly. It is important to learn about physical and emotional aspects of sexuality of various forms of existing sexual behavior that may improve the sexual health and make the individuals to be responsible for right sexual behavior. As an individual a sexual norm is always positive when the right behavior is chosen. Addiction to drug or alcohol abuse and illegal sexual behavior with multiple partners is the major cause of STIs and a negative sexual norm that affects the individual's health. Therefore, responsibility about health and sexual behavior is mandatory for an individual to have positive influence on personality and self development.

School based sex education programs have become controversial. The federal government started the sex education in the schools by endorsing abstinence only until marriage (AOUM) and promoted such programs by funding them. The AOUM programs promoted abstinence from sexual activity with the least information about condoms and contraception. A comprehensive sexual education is necessary to promote the sexual health and parents support for such programs in public school. The AOUM education is not effective in preventing teenage pregnancies or sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, controversies arose stating that comprehensive sex education may encourage adolescents to have sex and thus should be stopped. Sex education programs with intensive understanding of positive and negative aspects of having sex in adolescence should be promoted in schools to avoid teenage pregnancies and STI. Some experts may argue that comprehensive sex education may lower the risk of pregnancies than schools promoting AOUM sex education. In the recent times the federal funding for AOUM program has been eliminated and new abstinence education programs with pregnancy prevention in teens has been launched. Several health care reforms with personal responsibility educational programs through parent - teaches, parent - child communication and relationship along with decision making has been promoted.
