Atoms are the smallest and most rudimentary building blocks of substances and they can attach together to make molecules. The diameter of atoms varies from roughly 0.1 to 0.5 nanometers. Atoms are consisted of different units called protons, neutrons, and electrons. The electrons are negatively charged, whereas protons are positively charged and neutrons have no electrical charge at all. Both the protons and neutrons are located in the center of the atom, known as the nucleus, and a cloud of electrons are floating around the nucleus. The negatively charged electrons are attracted to the positively charged nucleus by an electrical force. In a neutral atom, number of protons and electrons are the same however, not always are the number of neutrons equal with protons and electrons.

The two samples can have dissimilar weights if they have different shares of hydrogen's isotopes. Isotopes are alternatives of a certain chemical component such that, while all isotopes of a given component have equal number of protons in each atom, they vary in number of present neutrons. Therefore, difference in the number of neutrons in different isotopes would have influence on the weight of them. The most three stable isotopes of hydrogen are hydrogen-1, hydrogen-2, and hydrogen-3 with a mass of 1, 2, and 3 respectively.
