Mentoring stands for the process of providing guidance, knowledge, advise or training to an individual by his mentor or guide. Mentoring relationship stands for the relationship between two people in which one is the mentor while the other is the mentee (on receiving end) wherein a mentor develops a relationship of a guide, coordinator, trainer, advisor, assessor, role-model etc. for the mentee. While, developmental relationship stands for the relationship between an adult and a young person or it could also be between an avid professional and a fresh executive wherein the experienced employee provides guidance and knowledge to the young professional developing his personal as well as professional growth. And, developmental network stands for a network in which an individual develops relations and networks with other people to make things happen smoothly and effectively. It is a network wherein all the associated people try to gain support, advise, guidance etc. from the other members creating a win-win situation for all of them.
Mentor stands for the person who provides guidance, knowledge, advise or training to other individuals (mentee) in developing and growing them. The main functions of a mentor are as follows - • Mentor is expected to inform the mentee about his own career paths and thereby try to inspire, motivate and induce the mentee in developing his own skills and abilities to achieve required objectives and goals. • Mentor acts as a guide, motivator, friend, philosopher, emotional support etc. for the mentee. • He is expected to make the mentee to explore and experience various situations and events and learn about professional world by setting goals for the mentee. • A mentor tries to increase the social network of the mentee by providing him with a platform to experience new life situations and thereby make optimum utilization of the resources. • Overall, a mentor acts as a light that diminishes the darkness of the mentee's life providing him with a motive to live and achieve success.

The following are the phases through which mentoring relationship typically progress - • Preparation ; in this step the mentor and the mentee prepare for developing a relationship between them wherein need for the development of this relationship is assessed and proper direction is set to achieve effective relationship. • Negotiation ; in this step the mentor and the mentee provide each other with their motive to be a part of this mentor-mentee relationship and informs each other the kind of expectations they have for each other so that proper schedule of mentoring could be developed. • Enabling growth ; in this step both the mentor as well as the mentee work for the achievement of their goal to provide effective mentoring and realization of the goals set by them enabling growth of the mentee. • Closure ; in this step the mentor and mentee relationship comes to an end with the achievement of successful mentoring by the mentor provided to the mentee in guiding him properly.
