Examine Figure 3-7. How does the pancreas have both endocrine and exocrine roles
Figure 3-7: (a) The pancreas lies above the small intestine and beneath the stomach. (b) In the expanded drawing, note how the pancreas consists of many lobes and produces both digestive enzymes and hormones. The enzymes, produced by exocrine cells, will be secreted into the pancreatic duct, which empties into the small intestine. (c) The endocrine cells of the pancreas are grouped in clusters, or islets, that are closely associated with blood vessels. The hormones produced by these endocrine cells will be secreted into the bloodstream for transport to target tissues.
