Deck 7: Designing a Clinically Based Qualitative Capstone Research Project
1
Discuss indications using a qualitative research design in the DNP capstone project.
A clinically based capstone project can use a qualitative research design when the researcher is concerned mainly with the process being implemented rather than the outcomes being achieved or products being utilized. The qualitative researcher is concerned with how research subjects make sense of their lives, experiences, and structures in their own world and the meaning these experiences and structures have for them.
2
Describe the primary instrument for collection and analysis of data in qualitative research.
In qualitative research, the researcher is the primary instrument for data collection as well as data analysis. Data collection frequently occurs through fieldwork, which means the researcher goes onsite to the research subjects' location to observe and record behavior in its natural setting. In addition, data are frequently recorded using field notes, which are free-flowing descriptions of research subjects, activities, and setting that also can include sketches or maps.
3
Which question is best answered by way of qualitative research?

A) What concepts are available for testing the hypothesis?
B) What scientific theory can explain the currently available data?
C) What existing knowledge will support formulating a hypothesis?
D) What concepts do research subjects use to classify their experiences?
D
Explanation: The qualitative researcher seeks to understand human responses and society's influence on each person's perception of reality, such as concepts used by research subjects to classify their experiences. The quantitative researcher is engaged in formulating and testing hypotheses, and using scientific theories to help explain data.
