Deck 16: Nonferrous Metals
1
Describe the two classifications of aluminum alloys.
Aluminum alloys have two classifications: wrought and casting. Wrought alloys are those that are mechanically worked by processes, such as forging, drawing, extruding, or rolling, to form sheet material. Cast alloys are those used to produce a product for which the molten metal is cast in a finished shape, such as a grille, in a sand mold or permanent mold.
2
Explain the galvanizing process with regard to zinc and its importance to the uses of zinc.
Zinc's major use is in forming a protective coating over steel to prevent rust. This is referred to as galvanizing. Galvanizing involves placing the steel to be coated into a bath of molten zinc, which bonds to its surface. It is important that the coating be free of imperfections, such as pinholes, that permit moisture to reach the steel and cause it to rust. Both galvanized sheet and strip material are available.
