The voltage output of a zirconia oxygen sensor when the exhaust stream is lean (excess oxygen) is ______________.

A) Relatively high (close to 1 volt)
B) About in the middle of the voltage range
C) Relatively low (close to 0 volt)
D) Either a or b, depending on atmospheric pressure
When the exhaust stream is lean, the voltage output of zirconia (zirconium dioxide) oxygen sensor is lower than 0.45 V. And when the exhaust stream is rich, the voltage output of a zirconia oxygen sensor is greater than 0.45 V.
In this way, it is clear that the voltage output of the sensor is close to 0 volt when the exhaust stream is lean.
In the given options, option 'c' only justifies the explanation given above.
Hence, the correct option is

How does an oxygen sensor detect oxygen levels in the exhaust?
The oxygen sensor produces a voltage signal and this voltage signal depends upon the volume of oxygen in the exhaust stream compared to the volume of atmospheric oxygen.
The electrolyte is solid and is the zirconium dioxide. There are also two porous platinum electrodes, which have the following functions.
• Exhaust side electrode is exposed to the exhaust stream.
• Ambient side electrode is exposed to outside air and is the signal electrode called as reference electrode.
If the exhaust is rich, oxygen from the electrodes wants to flow to the exhaust side electrode, which results in the production of a voltage.
If the exhaust is lean, oxygen flow is not needed, as a result, there is little if any electron movement and, therefore, no voltage is produced.
Contamination or corrosion in the zirconia oxygen sensor reduces the voltage signal output and consequently increases the oxygen level.
When the exhaust stream is lean, the voltage output of zirconia (zirconium dioxide) oxygen sensor is lower than 0.45 V. And when the exhaust stream is rich, the voltage output of zirconia oxygen sensor is greater than 0.45 V.
Exhaust oxygen content compared to the atmosphere oxygen is inversely proportional to the oxygen sensor voltage output. It means when first is low then the second will be high and vice-versa.
