Deck 8: Propagation
1
What is meant by PLS?
PLS refers to pure live seed. The basic factors that influence the quality of the seeds are viability and purity. Purity refers to the species pure seed's percent. Viability refers to the live or germinating seed's percent under the conditions of the laboratory.
The PLS varies, even, when the variety of the seeds are same. Therefore, it is used for determining the quality of the seed that is best. It is also used for adjusting the rate of the seeding.
When there is purity percentage is less than 100, then in involves the composition of weed seeds, inert matters and crop seeds. The PLS is depicted as the product of viability and purity percent. It is as follows:

It should be analyzed for its weight and size. Therefore, proper seeding rates should be calculated for the proper determination of the viable seeds. Differentiate between seed quality and viability.
Turf grasses are the species of grasses which are narrow-leaved. They form a consistent cover that is long lived. These grasses are grown on the ground and are susceptible to tolerate its cutting with a machine and or traffic.
Turf is a layer of grass that is present on the surface of the Earth. There are certain activities which are performed for the turf grass propagation. The turf grass seeds cultivars and species varies in the percentage of the seeds present in the lot of seeds.
The difference between seed quality and viability is as follows:

Explain the differences among breeder, foundation, registered, and certified seed.
The label that accompanies the packaging of the seed, possess an importance for the evaluation of the quality of seeds. It also lists the turf grass amount present in the packaging of the seeds.
Seeds are important for the enhancement of the production of agriculture and its productivity. There are certain classes of seeds. It includes breeder, foundation, certified and registered seeds.
Breeder seeds are the nucleus seeds offspring's. Breeder is an individual or an organization which assembles the plant for the purpose of breeding. These are produced by the mutual multiplication of 3 different lines that is A, B and R. The line A denotes female and lines B and R denotes the sterile males.
Foundation seeds are the offspring's of the breeder seeds. These seeds are breaded further, so that they could be able to produce the certified seeds. The State Seed Corporation produces the seeds (foundation) to enhance the demands.
Registered seeds are those seeds which are the progenies of the foundation seeds. These seeds are approved and are certified by the concerned certified agencies. These seeds are therefore, suitable for the production of the certified seeds.
Certified seeds are the last stage seeds, which arrive to the farmers. It is the progeny of the seeds (foundation). These seeds meet the standards of the seed certification. The standards are prescribed in the Indian Minimum Seeds Certification Standards.
