The American Society for Microbiology is preparing a "Microbe-Free" banquet to emphasize the importance of microorganisms in food production. What foods could not be on the menu?
Explanation
Organisms that are not visible to naked eye are called, microorganisms. The two essential microbial activities necessary for life are,
1. Conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonium ion is called nitrogen fixation. Mainly prokaryotic organisms such as many bacteria, Rhizobium species, actinomycetes and cyanobacteria are involved in nitrogen fixation process.
2. Atmospheric Oxygen replenishment by the photosynthetic microbes
Means, the microbes are essential for the survival of all the plants and animals. So, it is not possible to prepare a "Microbe Free" meal.
The preparation of other food products such as cheese, alcoholic beverages, bakery products, all require microbes. As the microbes are needed for plant growth (i.e. crop production), and survival of all living beings including the cattle, chicken, pigs, fish, other sea foods, no food will be available is the microbes are completely absent.
