There are many significant milestones in the development of the microbiology field. One of these milestones was the idea that microorganisms could cause disease. Koch was the first to show that a disease could be caused by a microbe. Previously it had been argued that diseases were a bad mix of the “spirits” in the human body. There was no scientific basis and no scientific way to prove this theory. Thus, no effective treatments could be made to combat these illnesses.

Koch utilized the scientific method and carefully controlled experiments to show that anthrax was caused by Bacillus anthracis via several different ways. By showing that a specific microbe can cause a disease, methods can be developed to prevent someone from contracting and/or spreading the disease. Treatments can also be devised to help someone with the disease.
