The content motivation theories emphasize on identifying and understanding employees needs. The following are the four content motivation theories:

Hierarchy of needs theory given by Maslow’s: This theory proposes that employees are motivated by the following five levels of needs in ascending order:

• Physiological needs: The basic needs of people such as air, water, food, shelter which are required for the survival come under these needs.

• Safety needs: Once the basic needs are satisfied then safety and security are priority to people.

• Social needs: After satisfying physiological and safety needs people look for friendship, love, acceptance and affection.

• Esteem needs: After meeting social needs, people focus on acquiring prestige, self-respect, recognition for their performance and accomplishments.

• Self-actualization needs: These are at the highest level in hierarchy of needs theory, employees look for opportunities for skill development, promotions, to be creative and have power and control over their jobs.
