The economy of a particular sport event influences the energy cost of the sport and interacts with VO2 max. An athlete who is economical spends less amount of energy than an uneconomical athlete. Therefore, to measure an athlete’s potential; the measurement of exercise economy is one of the useful parameters.

The energy expenditure is measured at several running speeds and a graph is plotted with running speed against energy expenditure to predict exercise economy. Quantification of economy of exercise is done by measuring the steady-state oxygen cost of a particular sport event.
