The process of heat production of the body is called thermogenesis. Since higher organisms like mammals need to maintain a constant body temperature, most of the energy intake is consumed to maintain homeostasis. The large body surface area of these organisms dissipates a large amount of heat. Therefore, heat lost must equal the heat produced.
