If a person with type 1 diabetes does not take an adequate amount of insulin, what happens to the blood glucose concentration during prolonged exercise? Why?
Step-by-step solution
Step 1 of 2
Type I diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). It usually occurs in children and young adults. This results from the failure of the body to produce adequate insulin. As a result, glucose is not absorbed by the cells from the blood stream, and the plasma glucose levels remain high. Exogenous insulin should be administered to maintain normal glucose levels.
