The American college of Sport Medicine (ACSM) uses a decision tree to identify individuals who need a physician’s clearance prior to participating in an exercise program. The individual is initially assessed to identify known diseases, from the medical history. Based on the medical history, participants are assigned into three risk categories. Based on the risk category person belongs, appropriate recommendations are made to initiate an exercise program or to progress the intensity and volume of existing program.
