Step 1 of 3

Since humans are homeotherms, they need to maintain a constant (core) body temperature. Mechanisms exist in the body to maintain a homeostasis. These mechanisms operate to maintain a balance between the rate of heat production and the rate of heat loss.

Due to the normal metabolic processes going on in the body, heat is produced. The amount of heat produced depends on the rate of metabolism. During rest, little heat is produced. However, during intense exercise, the amount of heat produced is large.
