Ventilation is defined as the movement of air from the environment to the lungs. Ventilation occurs due to the action of various muscles which bring about changes in the pressure between the two ends of the airways. Respiration involves both inspiration and expiration. Therefore, the muscles involved in both these processes are required for ventilation of the lungs.
