During exercise, heart rate changes according to the skeletal muscle oxygen demand. Heart rate is intrinsically controlled by the Sinoatrial node (SA node, the pace maker of the heart). The activity of SA node is regulated by parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
The vagus nerve supplies the sympathetic fibers to the heart. The nerve stimulation has a negative effect on the heart rate; it slows down the heart rate. Changes in the parasympathetic tone either increases or decreases the heart rate. A decrease in the parasympathetic tone increases the heart rate whereas an increase in the tone decreases the heart rate.
During exercise, parasympathetic tone decreases and promotes an increase in heartbeat.
