Cells require energy to perform various vital functions. The energy they require is obtained from the foods they consume. The food molecules contain energy in the form of chemical bonds. However, cells cannot directly use the energy these molecules possess. Through a series of enzyme catalyzed reactions, the energy is harvested and is used to synthesize ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of cells.
