Edition 9ISBN: 0073523534 Exercise 6
Define the terms glycogen, glycogenolysis, and glycolysis.
Step-by-step solution
Step 1 of 3
Glycogen is the storage polysaccharide of animals. It is composed of repeated units of glucose linked together by
glycosidic bonds. The polymer is mainly stored in liver and muscle. When the blood glucose falls below the normal, the body stimulates release of glucose from glycogen. The hormone insulin promotes synthesis of glycogen when excess glucose is present in the blood (glycogenesis).whereas the hormones glucagon, cortisol, and adrenal hormones stimulate breakdown of glycogen and release of glucose (glycogenolysis).
