The identification of the cases is an important step while investigation of field epidemiology. In order to establish whether a person has the disease, standard clinical criteria are used and are called as a case definition. Application of the standard case definition guarantees that each case is diagnosed consistently, irrespective of where or when the diagnosis occurs.
