The epidemiologists struggled for a long period of time in order to understand and identify the cause for the outbreak of the disease known as polio. As the symptoms of polio initially resembles that of various other diseases such as influenza and spinal meningitis and others, it was difficult to understand the disease. Infantile paralysis was initially known to be confined to children. The disease was expected to go via two- stage process.
